According to recent articles in the press a chronic shortage of affordable homes has increased the number of families living in temporary housing.

In the first quarter of this year 58,590 households in England were in temporary accommodation waiting for permanent housing, compared with 55,300 in the same quarter in 2013. This situation is not ideal but it’s a last resort for Councils if there are no vacant solutions for private accommodation.

In order to help alleviate this issue, we urgently need more Landlords to let their properties to people in receipt of housing benefit.

Roger Harding, head of policy, research and public affairs at Shelter says. "It's often job loss or an illness that tip families into needing housing benefit for short periods to help get themselves back on their feet. Without a stable place to live, that is almost impossible."

Contrary to popular misconceptions, tenants on benefits often prove to be more reliable long-term and look after the property. They need to make it work because they haven't alternative options and therefore can’t risk eviction.

At Orchard & Shipman we work with local authorities and central government to provide social housing solutions. We currently have a nationwide portfolio of over 3,500 properties and offer a very compelling proposition to today’s socially aware landlords:
